If your car is missing, there’s a fast mental checklist you can run through before you take any action. If you are thinking your car has been impounded, you are probably right but here is a quick checklist to run through before you start calling Tow & Storage Yards in the vicinity of where the vehicle was parked last.
- If Vehicle is Financed, are you behind on payments? If the answer is yes, call your bank and ask them if it has been repossessed. You can get it back, if you settle the past due amount plus a redemption fee.
- Did someone borrow the vehicle? Who has access to the keys? Before you report the vehicle stolen, think about who could have helped themselves to the vehicle and make some phone calls before you make a police report mistakenly. It is detrimental to have stolen vehicle history on your vehicle and it will have a demonstrable impact on the value.
- Where did you leave the vehicle last? This is where most people have a moment of reckoning…If you can’t remember, chances are you parked it in a tow away zone and it has been towed and impounded. It’s imperative that you “take a ride down memory lane” and think through where the vehicle was left last. That will give you a path to locating it – as Towing Contracts are awarded by jurisdiction and the police can advise you what agency you need to call.
- Was the vehicle stolen? Refer to question # 3 – where did you leave it last? Are there security cameras in that area? Go to where the vehicle was parked and look for broken glass – that is a clear indication that a window was broken to gain egress to the vehicle. If you work through the first 3 items above, chances are pretty good that the vehicle was stolen. It doesn’t always have to be a nice vehicle for someone to steal it. Later model Kia & Hyundai Vehicles are extremely easy to steal once inside the car. Never assume a vehicle is not worth stealing, we have seen people steal $500 cars as much as $50,000 ones.
