At OUTPOUND, we recently had the opportunity to help a family recover a classic microbus that had been sitting in an impound lot after the owner's passing. The children of the deceased didn’t want to keep the vehicle, they just wanted to liquidate it. But with growing storage fees and red tape, they were at risk of losing the van entirely. That’s where we stepped in.
We worked quickly to get the vehicle released from impound, paid off the outstanding fees, and returned financial value to the family. Without timely intervention, the van could have easily been absorbed by the impound lot, something we see far too often. One of the things we constantly emphasize is the urgency of addressing impounded or stored vehicles, especially when an estate is involved. Impound lots often take advantage of the situation. They might cover or hide valuable vehicles, avoid proper advertising, and rely on the public’s general lack of awareness about disclosure requirements. Their goal is simple: keep the vehicle long enough to claim ownership as fees pile up.
We sometimes compare these lots to “vampires” because they slowly drain the equity out of a vehicle. Every day in storage chips away at what the asset is worth, and unfortunately, many people don’t realize what’s happening until it’s too late. In this case, we were proud to help the family recover what we saw as an automotive heirloom. It wasn’t just a vehicle. it was a piece of their father’s legacy. Helping them turn a potential loss into a meaningful recovery is what we’re all about.
If there’s one message we want people to hear, it’s this: act fast. Stored and impounded vehicles lose value daily, reclaim them before someone else does.
